Far Cry 2 will ship with fourteen multiplayer maps, showcasing a variety of different environments found in the single player portion of the game. In a video highlighting some of the map editor's tools, the Multiplayer modes were revealed. Four multiplayer modes have been confirmed within the game, which are:

Deathmatch - A standard "free for all" game mode in which everyone tries to kill everyone else and the person with the most kills at the end of a round wins.

Team Deathmatch - Similar to "Deathmatch," but with separate teams. The team with the most kills at the end of the round wins.

Capture the Diamond - This is similar to "Capture the Flag" but with a variation on the idea. What those variations are is not known as of the game's release.

Uprising - This is a variation of territory control games. Each team has a captain. only the captain can capture control points. To win the game, one side must capture all the control points, then kill the enemy captain.

The are six available classes:

   * Commando - Mid-range assault class. Effective at fire-and-movement tactics.
   * Sharpshooter - Long-range specialist. Armed with highly accurate weapons.
   * Guerrilla - Short-range class. Specializes in close combat and ambush tactics.
   * Rebel - Specialist in explosives and fire. Strong on offense or defense.
   * Gunner - Heavy firepower specialist. Highly effective from static firing positions.
   * Saboteur - Equipped with silenced weapons. Specializes in stealth tactics.

According to a Eurogamer article there will be a 16-player online mode with persistent rewards and experience levels, similar to those displayed in Call of Duty 4. Players will be able to pick a class to fit their playing style. Other multiplayer modes are unconfirmed.

Clint Hocking, one of the lead designers for Far Cry 2 confirmed that Far Cry 2 will feature the best level editor available, not only on PC but on PS3 and Xbox 360 as well. "Within 48 hours of launch you will see ranked and rated four and five star maps" - Hocking
