Main Characters
- The Jackal
- A mysterious, U.S.-born arms dealer suppling both the APR and UFLL. He is a solid American man who has eluded the law for many years whilst trafficking and using illegal weapons, and has served warlords in over 16 different wars in Africa since the early '90s. He was briefly identified as being an inmate at Black Beach Prison, though has since eluded authorities. He speaks with a deep slow baritone, and for some reason prefers the machete over any of the firearms he sells.
He is known to have a genius-level understanding of literature and philosophy, and favors the work of Friedrich Nietzsche, and has established himself as both a nihilist and anarchist, though there is more to him that meets the eye.
- Addi Mbantuwe
- Leader of UFLL, former labor union chief and opposition leader. Mbantuwe is a ruthless man, commanding an army of rebels and mecenaries from the social club in Port Selao.
- Dr. Leon Gakumba
- Represents Mbantuwe in the district of Leboa-Sako.
- Major Oliver Tambossa
- Leader of APR, Chief of Staff of the former government. He collected the remenants of the collapsed government's army to stand against the UFLL. The Resistance is run from the offices of The Standard newspaper.
- Prosper Kouassi
- Second in command of the APR.
- Reuben Oluwagembi
- A journalist, working for a major British news agency, covering the civil war and searching for the Jackal. A native Nigerian, he was exiled to Johannesburg in South Africa, and now reports from Port Selao. His blog can be found here.
- Warren Clyde
- Warren Clyde grew up on an Arapaho Reservation in Oklahoma. As a youth, Warren worshipped his eldest brother, who served as an Army Ranger in Panama and Kuwait. Earning a scholarship, Warren delayed enlisting himself to attend Tulane University where he played football and worked towards an aeronautics degree. His military hopes were derailed by a sports injury, which kept him out of jump school. Disappointed and bitter, Warren applied to several police departments but was disqualified when his psych evaluations exposed instabilities. Later obtaining private security credentials in Florida State, Clyde worked for several years in Dominican Republic and Ecuador, doing personnel protection for a U.S. drilling company. He was eventually dismissed on disciplinary grounds. A year later, he was detained and deported to the States after attempting to enter Cuba on a false passport. After the loss of his certification, Clyde attended a civil aviation school in the Bahamas and began flying twin engine planes for a small charter company. In 2005 he was hired as a co-pilot for a now-bankrupt Liberian airline.
- Frank Bilders
- Growing up, Bilders had little contact with his father who was serving a life sentence for his involvement in a Belfast bombing only a month after Frank’s birth. Frank was recruited by militants in his neighborhood while still in public school, and began his career as a courier. By 19, he had moved into intimidation and enforcement rackets, developing a fearsome reputation. Bilders was arrested when he was 22 and sentenced to five years for ‘membership in a proscribed group’(I.R.A). While in The Maze he was linked with at least 4 inmate deaths. His time behind bars ended after he was attacked and kneecapped in a machine shop. Frank was released after serving three years and spending six months in rehab, then abruptly disappeared from Ulster amid rumors that he’d turned informant. Between 1995 and 1999, he resurfaced in Spain, Morocco, the former Yugoslavia, Yemen and Chechnya, involved with virtually every facet of the illicit economy. Immediately following 9/11, Bilders attempted to retire and briefly settled down in South Africa. He is fluent in English, French, the Irish Language, and Spanish.
- Marty Alencar
- A mercenary. He was born to a farmer outside of Belem, Brazil, where he was raised. He joined the US Southcom Advisory Forces in South America at 18. He was stationed in his native Brazil, as well as Peru and Colombia. He recieved extensive military training and also saw action in the Colombian Armed Conflict. In 2005 he retired from the USMC and joined Blackwater PMC, where he traveled to Afgahnastan and saw action there. He briefly vacationed to South Africa in 2008, and eventually joined the war in Sako. He is fluent in English and Spanish.
- Nasreen Davar
- Hakim Echebbi
- Paul Ferenc
Ferenc was born in Budapest, Hungary to a alcoholic and abusive father and a mother who tried her best to protect him. He grew up in a terrible environment, and killed his father out of self-defense in 1998. He fled Budapest and it's authorities, and ended up in the IDF (Israel Defence Forces), where he served in the war there and recieved military training. He was also known for laziness, finding loopholes in IDF rules, and disrespecting his commanders, which led to his desertion in 2003. He served as a contraband smuggler in a major Eurasian Black Market in Morocco, running guns from Morocco to Saudi Arabia. He worked as security for transportations until 2008, when he became a mercenary. He is fluent in English, Hungarian, Hebrew, and some Arabic.

Animals
According to Creative Director Clint Hocking, a large amount of animals will be present in the game. Large herds of grazing herbivores such as gazelles, zebras, buffalo, wildebeest and more will "not have a major effect on gameplay, but they can complicate the situation on occasion. Typically animals will flee the player or enemies when they detect them. Sometimes, enemies will chase or shoot at animals."
Predatory animals, such as lions or leopards, are not present in Far Cry 2.
Note that although not visually confirmed, in one gameplay video an elephant could be heard in the background audio.
Although there are some large herbivores that, in real life, can be dangerous, all animals in the game will flee from the player when approached. If the creature even touches a car, it will simply drop dead.
